C2C2011 Day 51 High Springs to Palatka, FL

It is May Day and our last long day on the bikes. Today we have real Florida weather again, mid 90s temperature and humidity. Strange that our first day in Florida was so cool and now it feels pretty hot.

I am ready for the tour to end and get home. It has been a great experience and I’ve have made great friends but I am missing Jeanne and my New Hampshire home.

C2C2011 Day 49 & 50 Madison to High Springs, FL

RO and I start the day late, we got in late last night and didn’t sleep well. Breakfast is at the “A” House and we need to ride over there. It is a surprisingly cold morning, 46 after so many 75 degree mornings.

RO’s front tire is flat so we are even later and decide to grab breakfast on the road. We stop at Burger King just a few miles away.

The day started with heavy rain and a storm warning. So while we were waiting Bubba moved breakfast to a nearby Steak and Shake.

C2C2011 Day 47 Marianna to Tallahassee, FL

The weather forecast is very threatening today, sustained 40 MPH winds from the south. I am concerned about staying in the narrow shoulders of US 90 in a wind like that. I leave very early, 7 AM before breakfast and hammer the 58 miles not stoping at sags. With the time change to Eastern Time, I get in around noon and have lunch at nearby Subway. Not many pictures today .

C2C20011 Day 46 DeFuniak Springs to Marianna, FL

I learned at breakfast that we are now in LA, lower Alabama not Florida per the locals. Day started with rain and a flat tire, my 9th. Rain stopped quickly and Krash fixed my time in no time. This mooring I got to see the 3 bears leave usually they are gone before I get up but Mike had a flat.

C2C2011 Day 45 Milton to DeFuniak Springs, FL

Short day today, 58 miles. It is a beautiful day, clear sunny, mid 80 and the road is smooth with a shoulder … Great riding day. We are out of the bustle of the shore and in country again, just mild traffic. We have a gift today, during the morning our side of the road is shaded from the sun by the tall trees along the side of the road. This feels more like Georgia than Florida.

C2C2011 Day 44 Dauphin Island, AL to Milton, FL

A very different day today in many ways. It is Easter and outside of our tents the Easter Bunny has left everyone a present. This helps us get ready for a long day with a later start because of the ferry crossing and long mileage, 85 mile.

The sky is bright and clear this morning, not fog today. Plus we start our day with a ferry ride across the bay to Gulf Shores, AL. Read the rest of this entry »

C2C2011 Day 42 & 43 Vancleave, MS to Daulphin Island, AL

Another foggy morning in bayou country. Breakfast is the usual time, 7 AM but RO and I don’t hit the road until 8 AM. Rand says he’ll join us along the way.

C2C2011 Day 41 Poplarville to Vancleave, MS

It’s 4 AM, 75 degrees with 100% RH … A logging truck just started up next to my tent so I am up thinking about the day to come. Lots of excitement yesterday, I am hoping that is passed. The back road yesterday was nice cycling … Two bridges out helped a lot. I am hoping today is like that as RO and I escort our two new French riders, Jacques and Pierre.

Steak dinner from last night hangs heavy in my stomach this morning. It is very foggy so RO and I wait until 8 AM to leave. Our new French riders decide to sag to the first stop.

It is still very foggy and the road has no breakdown lane but once we cross the interstate we turn onto a quiet road with no traffic.
